A Migrant's Journey:
Why they Leave, How They Come,
How do we receive them?
(Note the changed and broadened title)

September 27
9:30-2:00
First Congregational Church of Wareham (UCC)
11 Gibbs Avenue
Wareham, MA 02571

There has been a silent explosion in the number of unaccompanied minors coming into the U.S. from Latin America recently, mainly from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, three of the five most violent countries in the world. This has refocused attention on the larger issue of others from the region who come here looking for work. Estimates are that around 12 million people (mostly from Latin America) are now in the U.S. without legal status.
Why do they come? How do they come? And how should people of faith accept, reject, or understand them when they get here?
This forum can't "fix" that, but it can help us come a little closer to understanding the reasons they come and the ordeal they go through.

Speakers:
  • Karla Villatoro: a "DREAMer" from El Salvador, who will tell her personal story
  • Tammie Garner, an attorney and co-chair of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel that works with unaccompanied immigrant youths
